New AAP Report on Mental Health in Pediatrics Available Online
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) published the supplement "Enhancing Pediatric Mental Health Care: Report from the American Academy of Pediatrics Task Force on Mental Health" in the June 2010 issue of Pediatrics.  The Task Force’s report encourages partnerships between physicians and community partners, including early childhood stakeholders, to maximize mental health services in communities.

Resource highlights work with military families
A new National Center for Children in Poverty (NCCP) resource, Trauma Faced by Military Families: What Every Policymaker Should Know, highlights the challenges that military families face as a result of multiple deployments. More and more families are struggling with deployment situations as active duty military personnel and National Guard and reservists are serving overseas in the War on Terror. After nearly a decade of war, a growing area of research shows the negative impact on children, youth and families of U.S. military personnel. Children of military families often experience multiple stressors before and during their parent’s deployment and when they come home. Without appropriate mental health support systems, children of military personnel may be at a significant disadvantage compared with their peers in non-military families.

Funding Opportunity for communities

The United Methodist Health Ministry Fund has issued a new RFP - Fit for Kansas Kids: Calling Communities to Action. This RFP seeks proposals for coordinated nutrition and physical activity/fitness strategies targeting early childhood that intervene with childhood overweight before it occurs. Webcasts/teleconferences are being offered to review Fit for Kansas Kids guidelines and ask questions. Please register online to attend one of the three scheduled conferences on June 30 or July 16.
